Dear colleagues who have ever met Andrei Ershov, who was his friend or had scientific contacts with the Programming department which is now 50!
You’re welcome to our web-site dedicated to this date! Would you please register and answer our questionnaire, and your reminiscences will be read by everybody who greatly appreciates academician A. Ershov, a prominent scientist and person, and by those interested in the history of informatics in Siberia.
How, when, and why have you joined the Programming Department?Upon graduating from the Moscow Power Engineering Institute, I was assigned to work at the Institute of Mathematics of SB AS. I arrived on April1, 1961, and on Monday, April 3, I attended A.A. Zykov’s seminar on graph theory, where Ershov spoke about memory allocation by graph coloring. During the break, we walked up and down the long third floor corridor of the school building, where the University was situated at that time. By the time we returned to the seminar room, I had already had Ershov’s invitation to work at the PD. To the disappointment of E.V. Evreinov, I started my work at the PD on April 5. I had known A.P. back in Moscow, I was familiar with his works on operator algorithms and languages, and I used it as the grounds in my request to Sergei L. Sobolev for work at the IM.
How, when, and why have you joined the Programming Department? In 1977/78 I read a 1977 IFIP TC2 Work Conference paper by Andrei Petrovich on Mixed Computation. To better understand it I rewrote it, from Algol 68 into the VDM specification language. In that way I came across some questions which I communicated, together with the rewrite, to AP. On my way home from an IFIP WG2.2 meeting in Kyoto, Japan, I flew by way of Khabarovsk and Irkutsk to Novosibirsk and visit the PD for a short week: 5 days early Sept. 1978.
How, when, and why have you joined the Programming Department?I joined the PD in 1977 on assignment upon graduating from the Novosibirsk State University.
How, when, and why have you joined the Programming Department? My brother worked at the Computing Center, and he brought me to work for Igor Pottosin in 1974.
How, when, and why have you joined the Programming Department? In the summer of 1959, I graduated from the Moscow State University and got the assignment to a P.O. Box organization in Zlatoust, whereas my wife, a microbiologist, was assigned to the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences. It took me a great effort to secure my re-assignment to Novosibirsk Institute of Mathematics, where a computing center was being formed at that time.
How, when, and why have you joined the Programming Department?I was brought to the Programming Department in the beginning of 1972 by my husband Jacob who was a post-graduated student of Andrei P. Ershov by this time.
How, when, and why have you joined the Programming Department?I was transferred from The Novosibirsk Branch of IPMCE on March 11, 1976, when the School Informatics Group was formed at Ershov’s department.
How, when, and why have you joined the Programming Department?I was a student of NSU when I came to the Programming Department in 1969 to do a course and then graduate work. My scientific supervisor was V.A. Nepomniaschy. I became enthusiastic working over the project. I remember very well as I have already admired the creative atmosphere that had prevailed in the department by that time. Here's just one of the episodes of the time. During two meetings in succession I (a student) made the report at a seminar on the recent work of Kaplan, which applies mathematical approach to the concept of "program" and "equivalence" on programs of models. After the seminar Narinyani, Tyugu and Zwinogrodski (an intern from Poland, I can not warrant for the correct spelling of his names), "lured" me to the hotel, and during some hours we enthusiastically discussed the issues raised in this (and not only) article. Hey, I said to myself, what a great people work here: they are ready to discuss for hours with interest abstract topics and seriously take your student's opinion. Therefore, when Andrei P. Ershov offered me position of trainee-researcher in his department after my university graduation, I gladly accepted. By the way in August 1971 some my other former classmates came with me to the Programming department. They were Sergei Pokrovsky, Mark Trakhtenbrot, Frida Fenske-Svetlakova, Volodya Shelekhov, Tolik Buda, Pasha Kim, Tanya Vasyuchkova, Irina Anikeeva, and Victor Kasyanov.
How, when, and why have you joined the Programming Department? It was Galina Narinyani who brought me to the PD. I remember the exact date: September 13, 1976.
